Artek's Stool 60, designed by the critically-acclaimed Alvar Aalto, is one of the most iconic pieces of Finnish furniture design. Aalto's stool remains an exquisite, timeless product, with its minimalistic shape embodying modernity. The 60 stools are convenient additions, which can be neatly stacked to create a stylish tower when not in use. The stool can also double up as a side table, for instance next to an armchair or in the bedroom. When Aalto's origional three-legged Stool 60 was first presented in 1933, it was a revolutionary concept in the design world, and a major milestone for modern Scandinavian design. To produce the bent leg, the same process is still employed today - a solid birchwood is sawn along the fibres to create a fan shape, into which thin layers of plywood are glued. This structure makes it possible to bend the wood by heating or steaming the desired angle and when dry, it will have a very strong texture that can be easily joined to the seat.
